What exactly are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain that actually bond to the teeth. In fact, the porcelain bond to the tooth is nearly as strong as the natural enamel found in teeth.

Porcelain bonded to enamel is one of the most successful restorations available today in modern dentistry.

What are direct veneers ?

Although porcelain veneers are a very efficient way to reconstruct teeth and improve your smile, it is an irreversible procedure due to the fact it is necessary to remove some amount of your natural, and often healthy tooth.

Direct veneers are an alternative for cosmetic makeover smiles. Without removing any of the natural tooth, which makes it a reversible procedure. The veneer is made by the cosmetic dentist directly in your mouth. It requires a great deal of art and skill to make each veneer appear as a natural tooth, and there are few dentists capable of making complete smiles consisting of direct veneers.

We are specialists in full mouth direct veneer makeovers.

What is that black line I see around the gum line of my crowns (or other people's crowns) ?

The black indicates that there is oxidation on the metal underneath the white porcelain. The black line you see around the crown was not there when the crown was placed.

Over time, chronic inflammation of the gum tissue causes it to bleed easily and perhaps recede from the metal, exposing it. It is no longer necessary to have metal in crowns or that unattractive dark line. We use full-porcelain restorations for both front and rear teeth, giving the highest precison, longest lasting and healthiest restorations possible. No longer is it necessary to have metal in crowns or that unattractive dark line. We use all-porcelain crowns or veneers on front restorations.

How long can it take for a complete smile makeover

This depends on the level of treatment required, for example average "complicated" cases which include crowns, direct veneers and numerous inlays have been performed in 10 days (in some cases attending 2 appointments per day) achieving excellent results, a case which is normally performed in 3-4 months in other countries.

"Medium" cases which include veneers and change of silver fillings for white restorations have been performed in 1 week.

Full mouth smile makeover veneers can be performed in 4 days.

We complete treatments faster due to an excellent connection with our laboratory and exclusively attending patients from abroad who receive exclusive treatment time and are given consecutive appointments when appropriate to ensure that treatment is completed on time or even ahead of schedule.

To accomplish this, we pride ourselves on the fact that we only accept a set number of patients per week enabling us to deliver the quality of service and treatments you deserve.

Of course, time frames indicated here are an average estimate based on previous cases completed; it may vary depending on your specific needs.

White & silver restorations

I have a lot of old silver fillings in my mouth that have been there for a while. What are my options?

Old silver fillings leak, causing decay to re-enter the tooth. Not to mention they are unsightly. Options for silver filling replacements include direct composites (white fillings) or inlays, all of which provide an aesthetically appealing and healthy result.

Today, many composites are superior to amalgam, in meanings of wear, marginal adaptation (closeness of fit to the tooth), surface smoothness, wear of opposing teeth, breakage and color match.

However, we strongly recommend only replacing old amalgams with full ceramic inlays which are the strongest, most aesthetic and most durable option.

Is the mercury in amalgam fillings toxic?

There is a controversy over the potential adverse health effects of silver amalgam fillings, which are made up to 70% mercury. Mercury is toxic, and recent research, however, seems to show that these fillings release a very small amount of mercury vapour during chewing. It is unclear whether or not this amount of mercury is harmful to the body and therefore, many people are choosing the mercury-free fillings because of this health issue and aesthetic visibility.

Since many European countries have banned "silver" mercury dental fillings, we don't endorse the idea that amalgam is safe.

Inlays are mentioned a lot. What are they exactly

Inlays are modern, conservative dental restorations. Essentially they take the place of silver fillings, but they provide more strength to the damaged tooth and have the added benefit of looking just like the natural tooth.

In comparison to crowns or "caps", inlays require less removal of tooth structure and replace only what is needed (i.e. old fillings and decays). Inlays are a conservative, aesthetic, and long lasting treatment for replacement of silver fillings.

What is a root canal?

Like other parts of the body, infection which requires treatment can occur in teeth. This infection can occur due to trauma, leaking fillings, decay or teeth that have had many repeated fillings. Although antibiotics can be used to reduce the infection, they cannot return the tooth to a normal healthy state.

Therefore, treatment needs to be instituted to remove the source of the infection. By reaching the source of the infection which is in the canal system of the root, it is possible to clean and sterilize the inside of the tooth and the area that is causing the infection. This treatment, called root canal therapy is a highly successful procedure and treated teeth can last a lifetime.

We provide complete root canal treatments for all kinds of clinical cases and we use the latest technology like digital apex locators (which electronically measures the length of the tooth for more accuracy) and Digital Rotatory Systems (enabling you to have a root canal treatment in just minutes).

Why do wisdom teeth cause problems? Must they always be removed?

Third molars, otherwise known as wisdom teeth generally erupt into the oral cavity from 18 years of age.

People usually develop four wisdom teeth; however, others may develop only two or three. Some people never develop wisdom teeth at all.

The main reason why wisdom teeth cause problems is because they are the last teeth to emerge and there may be insufficient space available in the mouth for normal eruption.

However, when there is adequate space available, wisdom teeth can erupt normally and do not need to be removed. More frequently, space is limited and wisdom teeth cannot erupt, causing what is known as an impacted tooth.

We provide a full oral surgery service for those requiring wisdom teeth extractions.
