Manage servicesDental extraction, also known as exodontia, is a surgical procedure to remove one or more teeth from the mouth due to severe damage making repair impossible or excessive crowding, which prevents proper alignment of the remaining teeth.
Although natural teeth are meant to last a lifetime, there are several reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary. A common reason involves a tooth that is too damaged to be repaired, whether due to trauma, infection, or decay.
Sometimes, dentists extract teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontics. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if the teeth are too large for the mouth. Similarly, if a tooth cannot emerge through the gum (erupt) due to lack of space, we may also recommend its removal.
If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp, the center of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels, bacteria in the mouth can enter the pulp and cause an infection. Often, this can be treated with a root canal therapy, but if the infection is so severe that antibiotics or root canal treatment cannot resolve it, an extraction may be needed to prevent the infection from spreading and compromising other teeth.
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth, causing the teeth to loosen. Once it reaches an advanced stage, tooth extraction may be necessary.
